Kittisaro is a former Buddhist monk who graduated from Princeton and won a Rhodes scholarship to attend Oxford University. He and Thanissara, his wife, run Dharmagiri, a Buddhist hermitage they founded in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The couple also teach at the nearby Buddhist Retreat Centre. In response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa, Kittisaro and Thanissara have initiated several outreach and relief programs. Additionally, during their overseas teaching engagements, Kittisaro and Thanissara raise funds to support rural education in KwaZulu-Natal.
