Matika Wilbur, the creator of Project 562, has photographed more than 300 of the 562 federally recognized Native American tribes in the U.S. She has traveled by plane, boat, horseback, and in her RV, the Big Girl.
Darkfeather Ancheta, left, is pictured with her nephew Eckos Chartraw-Ancheta and her sister Bibiana Ancheta at the edge of Tulalip Bay in Washington State. They are participating in an annual Canoe Journey, where more than one hundred tribes travel for weeks and, upon landing, share traditional knowledge, ancestral songs, and sacred dances.
