Edward Abbey was an environmental advocate and the author of twenty-one books of fiction and nonfiction. During the 1950s and ’60s he worked as a ranger at national parks in Arizona, Florida, and Utah, where his memoir Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness takes place.

Mary DeMocker, the author of The Parents’ Guide to Climate Revolution, is convinced we can still build a healthy and just future. She lives in Eugene, Oregon, where she enjoys singing in three-part harmony around a campfire.

Tony Hoagland was the author of the poetry collections Priest Turned Therapist Treats Fear of God, Recent Changes in the Vernacular, and What Narcissism Means to Me. He died of pancreatic cancer in October 2018 at the age of sixty-four.

Elizabeth Poliner’s books include What You Know in Your Hands and As Close to Us as Breathing. She teaches in the MFA and undergraduate creative-writing programs at Hollins University, and her desk is a happy mess. She lives in Roanoke, Virginia.

Heather Sellers is at work on a memoir about growing up in Florida. She lives and swims in Saint Petersburg, where she also writes poetry and teaches creative writing.

Sarah Vallance lives in Sydney, Australia, with her wife and a collection of animals. She recently adopted a deaf dog named Tess, and they are both attempting to learn sign language. Sarah’s new book, Prognosis: A Memoir of My Brain, is forthcoming in 2019 from Little A.

Deanna Dikeman received a United States Artists Booth Fellowship for her photography. A competitive ballroom dancer, she lives in Columbia, Missouri.

Gina Easley is a photographer who lives in Eugene, Oregon. She is often distracted from her work by the wildlife that passes through her yard, especially a deer that she lovingly calls Mama.

Gloria Baker Feinstein is learning how to paint and play the ukulele. She recently moved to Portland, Oregon, where she gets to wear her pink-and-yellow rain boots more often.

Roger P. Watts is a former photojournalist who now teaches psychology at Concordia University in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He volunteers as a chef for Catholic Charities and as a photographer for Theatre in the Round Players in Minneapolis.

Nate Zeman is a nature photographer who grew up in Wisconsin and now lives in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

Cole Thompson lives on a small ranch in Laporte, Colorado, with his wife, dog, cats, chickens, llamas, and Alvin the donkey. He took the photo on this month’s cover in Alabama Hills, California, an area of rugged rock formations that has been used as a film location since the 1920s.
