“Join in Jesus!”
Boiling onions with celery.
“Soup to crippled masses . . .
Join in prayer.”
Cooking soup they hardly ate,
Fish they did not want.
Passing out books they could not read.
Passing down judgement.
“Come unto Jesus,
Eat, children, come
Unto the Savior!”
Old men stopping cars
To wipe windows and beg.
Sleeping twisted under newsprint.
Wanting only numbness,
Only to be joined in silence,
Only to be passed cheap wine,
And to be spared from judgement.
