Deborah Shouse digs with her daughter for crystals. “ ‘This has two great elements of life,’ I tell her as we kneel together on the mud mountain, searching through the thick red clay. ‘Playing in mud and playing in water.’ My daughter says, ‘Maybe you have to be older to get so excited about things like mud and water.’ That’s how old I am.”
