The world, Govinda, is not imperfect or slowly evolving along a long path to perfection. No, it is perfect at every moment; every sin already carries grace within it, all small children are potential old men, all sucklings have death within them, all dying people — eternal life. It is not possible for one person to see how far another is on the way; the Buddha exists in the robber and dice player; the robber exists in the Brahmin. During deep meditation it is possible to dispel time, to see simultaneously all the past, present and future, and then everything is good, everything is perfect, everything is Brahman. Therefore it seems to me that everything that exists is good — death as well as life, sin as well as holiness, wisdom as well as folly. Everything is necessary, everything needs only my assent, my loving understanding; then all is well with me and nothing can harm me. I learned through my body and soul that it was necessary for me to sin, that I needed lust, that I had to strive for property and experience nausea and the depths of despair in order to learn not to resist them, in order to learn to love the world, and no longer compare it with some kind of desired imaginary world, some imaginary vision of perfection, but to leave it as it is, to love it and be glad to belong to it.
The world is holy! The soul is holy! The skin is holy. The nose is holy! The tongue and cock and hand and asshole holy!
Those who would take over the earth And shape it to their will Never, I notice, succeed. The earth is like a vessel so sacred That at the mere approach of the profane It is marred And when they reach out their fingers it is gone.
You are to learn to listen to the cursed radio music of life and to reverence the spirit behind it and to laugh at its distortions.
There is no ultimate reason for calling anything important or valuable; no ultimate reason for preferring one thing to another.
Everywhere I look I see only my own desires.
You learn the simple rule of the game is that as long as you push away one plane to grab another, you’re still off balance. Ultimately, you understand that the truth must be balanced with the caring with the honoring of this incarnation. That’s when you start to develop the capacity to look up and to look down at the same moment. To look in and to look out . . . when you look at pure truth you can see the grace that suffering is. From your point of view, when you’re suffering,“Fine, I’m suffering, that’s interesting,” at the same moment if you are looking down and honoring your incarnation, you’re working to alleviate suffering . . . you see the perfection of it all in the evolutionary journey of beings. And at the same moment the caring part of you is like the bleeding heart of Jesus and you look down and see the blood on the snow. If you are really going to help them get out of the illusion, you yourself must not get lost in the illusion, you must continue to keep your own eye fixed on absolutely clear truth. You love without clinging, you help without being identified as the helper, you protest without getting lost in your protest, you care for your child remembering that, behind it all, here we are.
If you have love, you do all things well.
If you form a guilt in your mind, then it is a reality for you, and you must work it out. But many of you form guilts for which there is no adequate cause, and you saddle yourselves with these guilts without reason. In your dimension of activity there appears to be a wild assortment of evils. Let me tell you that he who hates an evil merely creates another one . . . You should turn the other cheek because you realize that basically the attacker only attacks himself.
Men are not in hell because God is angry with them; they are in wrath and darkness because they have done to the light, which infinitely flows forth from God, as that man does to the light of the sun, who puts out his own eyes.
We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.
