    Standards of Care
The Sun InterviewBy Naomi PittsStandards of CareRolonda Donelson on Bias and Anti-Science Attitudes in Medicine

The reason Black women were used to develop the field of gynecology was because they were no more than property. They weren’t seen as people; they were just seen as things. The controlling of Black women’s bodies started with chattel slavery, but it continues today.

By Andrew Snee•October 28, 2025

Recent book releases from Sun authors are as eclectic as the magazine itself. They include a book of essays about how we care for one another, a memoir about being released from prison, a collection of stories that combine the supernatural and the mundane, and a coffee-table book about klezmer musicians. Pick one up today and support these wonderful writers and artists.

The Book of Kin

Jennifer Eli Bowen's work has appeared in The Sun four times. "My most rewarding reader experiences have always come from those publications," she says. "Finding community in The Sun has been one of the highlights of my writing journey." She wrote for us most recently in April 2024, about adopting a dog from a shelter inside a Louisiana state prison. She is the Founding Artist Director of the Minnesota Prison Writing Project, and her essay "Night Cows" [August 2020] won a Pushcart Prize. Her new book of essays, The Book of Kin: On Absence, Love, and Being There, is out now from Milkweed editions and includes work that first appeared in The Sun.

Of Time and Punishment

If you enjoyed "Rough Road," by J.D. Mathes in our August issue, his memoir Of Time and Punishment, published in October by Stephen F. Austin State University Press, continues the story of his attempts to find work and friendship after his release from federal prison in 1985. Mathes's work has appeared in The Sun once before, in 2012, and he has the unique distinction of having led the southernmost writing workshop in the world—while working on a helicopter-rappel crew at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, Antarctica.

The Church of Divine Electricity

In our October issue Emily Mitchell wrote about a woman who turns into a spider ["Thread"]. Back in December of 2018 we published her short story "On Becoming a Cat." Will anyone transform into an animal in her new short story collection, The Church of Divine Electricity—released this month by the University of Wisconsin Press? Anything is possible with Mitchell's funny, inventive blend of literary and speculative fiction
