    To Remain
The Sun InterviewBy Judith HertogTo RemainRaja Shehadeh on Living through Destruction in Palestine

I have been thinking that people all over the world these days are feeling a sense of despair because, like me, they are seeing the destruction of the world as they knew it. But it has occurred to me that the real destruction of my world happened in 1948, when the Palestinians lost Palestine.

Photography

We’re interested in black-and-white photographs—from intimate moments of human connection to striking natural wonders—reminding us to take a closer look at the world around us.

When we accept a photograph, we keep the image on file until we find a place for it in the magazine. It can sometimes take quite a while for us to find the right issue for an accepted photograph, but we review every image in our file when putting together each monthly issue.

Guidelines

Number of Photographs

We will consider up to 30 photos at once—please attach all of your files to the same submission. Photographers may submit as many times as they like as long as each submission is limited to 30 photos.

Formats

Uploaded black-and-white image files must be in 72 dpi GIF, JPEG, PNG, or TIFF format. Individual files must be smaller than 2 MB.

Model Releases

Model releases are not required for images taken in a public setting. We ask for model releases in private settings when a person’s face is recognizable.

FAQ

How to Submit

We consider submissions online via Submittable.

We do not consider unsolicited submissions via email.

Submission Titles

It is not necessary to title the images in a submission as we will request information about a photo at the time of acceptance. However, if it helps you keep track of which photos you submitted to us, we suggest numbering or referencing them in a way that is helpful to you.

High-Res Files

When we accept an image, we will request a high-res file for publication—an uncompressed TIFF or JPEG file at 300 dpi or higher (at roughly 8 × 10 inches or larger).

Response Time

We try to respond to each submission within one month, though occasionally it takes longer.

Submission Status

You can check the status of an online submission by logging into Submittable, where you can track your submission and see the most recent status.

Withdrawing a Submission

You can withdraw your online submission from consideration via Submittable.

To withdraw just one image from a submission of multiple photographs, please send us a message through Submittable with the details of the file you'd like to withdraw.

Payment

We offer payment upon publication of accepted work. We pay via PayPal or direct deposit.

Rights

We purchase one-time print and online publishing rights. Click here to view a sample contract.

Thinking About Writing Us a Letter?

Give in to the temptation. We love getting mail.

Write Us A Letter!

Humanity, delivered monthly.

In each issue of The Sun you’ll find some of the most radically intimate and socially conscious writing being published today. In an age of media conglomerates, we’re something of an oddity: an ad-free, independent, reader-supported magazine.
