    To Remain
The Sun InterviewBy Judith HertogTo RemainRaja Shehadeh on Living through Destruction in Palestine

I have been thinking that people all over the world these days are feeling a sense of despair because, like me, they are seeing the destruction of the world as they knew it. But it has occurred to me that the real destruction of my world happened in 1948, when the Palestinians lost Palestine.

The Sun Spring Writing Retreat

May 22–24, 2026

January 22, 2026
WALOGO

We invite you to join Sun readers, writers, and staff for a weekend retreat celebrating the written word this May 22 through 24 in North Carolina. The authors will lead workshops geared to bring forth the best in your own essays, short stories, and poems. A Readers Write session will help get your pen moving. And the weekend will include readings by the authors. We hope you’ll join us.

The event will be held at the Wildacres Retreat in Little Switzerland, North Carolina. You don’t have to think of yourself as a writer to attend. The best part of a Sun gathering is getting to meet people who appreciate the magazine’s compassionate, unflinching view of the world as much as you do.

Register online here. A large enrollment is expected, so we recommend registering early.

We’re dedicated to making The Sun accessible to everyone, regardless of background or financial circumstances. That extends to our events. The Sun will award four full scholarships to emerging writers who would not otherwise be able to attend. Apply for a full scholarship here.

In each issue of The Sun you’ll find some of the most radically intimate and socially conscious writing being published today. In an age of media conglomerates, we’re something of an oddity: an ad-free, independent, reader-supported magazine.
