J. Malcolm Garcia is a longtime journalist and the author of eight books of nonfiction, including Alabama Village (forthcoming from Penguin Random House). He lives in San Diego, California.

Kenneth Hart is currently trying to convince himself that sixty is the new fifty. In addition to teaching writing at New York University, he works in the family roofing business in New Jersey, where he lives. His first collection, Uh Oh Time, won the 2007 Anhinga Prize for Poetry.

Alison Luterman is busy practicing descending minor thirds, going to qigong, and teaching creative-writing classes. She lives in Oakland, California, where there’s a taco truck at the foot of her street.

Michael Owen lives in a New York City walk-up with two young Chihuahuas, two middle-aged cats, and an ancient six-foot Steinway. Between triathlons, he writes about athletics and creativity in his Substack newsletter, Western Coffee: @western.coffee.

Sam Ruddick is a PEN/O. Henry Prize–winning fiction writer whose work has appeared in The Threepenny Review, Glimmer Train, and more. He lives in Alabama with his daughter and a very nice cat who leaves dead chipmunks at the door.

Leath Tonino is a freelance magazine writer and the author of two essay collections. He lives at nine thousand feet in the Colorado Rockies, on the west side of the Continental Divide.

Kai Carlson-Wee has rollerbladed professionally, surfed north of the Arctic Circle, and traveled across the country by freight train. He lives in San Francisco, California, and teaches creative writing at Stanford University.

Clemens Kalischer was born in Bavaria, Germany, and immigrated to the United States in 1942. His photographs appeared in The New York Times, Newsweek, and Time. He died in 2018 at the age of ninety-seven.

Rye Karlin-Rafael lives in Corvallis, Oregon, with their family and toddler. Outside of their work as a counselor, they can be found weaving sticks, making ceramics, and seeking soul restoration on the Oregon coast.

Lex Kim is a self-taught photographer and darkroom printer based in Brooklyn, New York, where she also runs her own dog-walking business. She travels with her own dog, Dziga Vertov, everywhere she goes.

Jon Kral spent decades as a photojournalist shooting for three Florida newspapers. He now lives in the mountains of North Carolina.

Adrian Newcombe is a photographer based in Cork, Ireland. Over the last decade he’s been photographing the marine litter polluting our shorelines. He appreciates the way that black-and-white accentuates the textures of these seascapes and the plastic he finds there.

Jim Weis is a retired community college instructor who lives in the foothills outside of Fort Collins, Colorado.

John Wehrheim was born in Chicago and now lives on the Hawaiian island of Kaua‘i. An award-winning photographer and documentary filmmaker, he has documented Hawaiian architecture, landscapes, and communities since 1969. He took this month’s cover photo on Ke‘e Beach, as his daughter and two neighborhood children stood to greet the sunrise.
