    I have been thinking that people all over the world these days are feeling a sense of despair because, like me, they are seeing the destruction of the world as they knew it. But it has occurred to me that the real destruction of my world happened in 1948, when the Palestinians lost Palestine.

Sarah Silbert is a full-time professor of writing at Vermont Technical College. She also teaches creative writing at New England Medical Center in Boston and at the Ucross Artists Foundation in Wyoming. This past year, her work has appeared in Ploughshares, Hope Magazine, and Agni.

When the doctors told us Jeff was dying of leukemia, he and I began to fight. Jeff was twenty-nine, I was twenty-eight, and we’d been building a sixteen-by-twenty-four-foot timber-frame cabin on a small hill of hard ground in Vermont’s Green Mountains.
