Karen Vogel is not Canadian but moved to Schomberg, Ontario, Canada, for the love of her husband, a Polish-Canadian cellist whom she met in Poland and decided to marry one week later. In her spare time she edits Wikipedia articles and posts to her blog, Dear Mister Baby. “The First Year” is her first published essay.

Largely because of a dog named Fred, who despised hats and joggers and anything that his unknowable mind deemed suspicious, Mateusz and I rented a farmhouse north of Toronto in the summer of 2010.
